Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow
by Rosemarie Spinella   |    Certified Makeup Artist and Esthetician
Summer is finally here. Sleeves are coming off, shorts are coming on and its time to show some smooth, “fuzz free” skin. Waxing is a very convenient, cost effective and quick method of removing unwanted body hair. Waxing removes hair directly from the root and lasts longer than other methods such as depilatory creams and shaving, which simply break the hair off at the surface of the skin. Although it’s not a permanent hair removal method, the hair that grows back (typically in 3-6 weeks) is softer and finer. As an added bonus, waxing is also exfoliating to the skin by removing dead skin cells which reveal softer, smoother skin.

There are a few waxing no-no’s to be aware of. Avoid waxing if you are using/taking Retin A or tetracycline medication, which will make skin prone to peeling or breaking. Also avoid if you’ve had microdermabrasion or a facial peel within a week or so. There are also some other medications or health conditions that may cause heightened sensitivity so always be sure to check with your esthetician before getting waxed. To prevent the (sometimes inevitable) ingrown hair that may pop up, try exfoliating the area the third day after waxing, then follow 2-3 times a week. This will keep follicles clear and reduce the chances of pores being blocked.

With so many varieties and types of waxes out there, even the most sensitive skin types can enjoy waxing. Soft wax is the most typically used formula and is applied to the skin and removed with a strip. Hard wax is a great choice for super-sensitive skin types and delicate areas. It is applied thick, and as it hardens the wax adheres to hair and not the skin. As a result, it is gentler and less painful when removed. Pre and post treatment of the skin being waxed is important in keeping you safe and healthy. Proper hygiene is an absolute must, so also be sure that there is a “no double-dipping” policy.

That being said…..summer will be “hair today, gone tomorrow” so enjoy it. Happy Waxing!!
