"What's Good For You? Cucumbers!"
by Jo Ann Bellistri - GEM Magazine LI 6/7/12

Cucumbers: Cooling, refreshing and very hydrating, cucumbers have 96% water content.

BENEFITS:
• They are great for your skin, water-rich and loaded with vitamins A, B & C.

• Cucumbers have cancer fighting lignans. They are known as the best kidney cleanser around.

• A great weight-loss food, cucumbers are low in calories and contain fiber. They also aid in digestion.

Tip: When buying cucumbers, look for plump, firm ones with medium to dark green coloring. Organic cucumbers are best because then you don’t have to peel them. Eating the skins of the cucumber is a great way to get all the health benefits they have to offer. The silicon compounds and chlorophyll in the skin are incredibly beautifying. Eat cucumbers daily!

"What's Good For You? Almonds!"
by Jo Ann Bellistri - GEM Magazine LI 6/8/12

Almonds: Believe it or not, almonds help with weight loss when eaten in moderation.

BENEFITS:
• Almonds reduce heart disease risk.

• With the presence of manganese, copper and riboflavin, almonds help to boost energy.

• The flavanoids found in almond skins and the vitamin E found in the meat team up to double the impact of the antioxidants either delivers separately.

• When eaten on a regular basis, almonds help to regulate cholesterol levels, lowering LDL and increasing HDL.

Tip: Many pesticides and herbicides are used on almond trees, so it is a good idea to buy organic almonds, especially if you eat them on a regular basis. Packaged almonds are available year round, but you’ll find the freshest almonds in the bulk section of your health food store. To maximize the health benefits, choose organic, raw almonds at the peak of their season, mid summer.

"What's Good For You? Dark Chocolate!"
by Jo Ann Bellistri - GEM Magazine LI 6/11/12

Dark Chocolate: Hooray! This delicious treat is good for you too. Dark Chocolate is loaded with flavanols that are great for the heart.

BENEFITS:
• Dark chocolate has tons of cell-protecting antioxidants.

• Its low glycemic index means that eating a piece of dark chocolate won’t send your blood sugar to the moon.

• Dark chocolate contains vital minerals.

• The mood enhancing benefits come from some of the 500 natural chemical compounds found in dark chocolate.

Tip: Not all chocolate is equal. Eating the right kind of dark chocolate is the key to getting all the health benefits. Milk and white chocolate have none of the health benefits of dark chocolate. Flavanols and antioxidants are found in real cocoa. When buying, look for at least 70% cocoa on the label. Also be wary of loads of added stuff like sugar, fat, waxes and chemicals. The more processed the fewer flavanols. Look for a short ingredient list. Enjoy dark chocolate in moderation, an ounce or two several times a week.

"What's Good For You? Blueberries!"
by Jo Ann Bellistri - GEM Magazine LI 6/12/12

Blueberries are near the top of the USDA’s best sources of antioxidant list.

BENEFITS:
• Anti-cancer properties: the powerful antioxidants help fight cancer by neutralizing free-radical damage.

• Eye health: blueberries can help prevent or delay all age related eye problems.

• Cognitive benefits: studies have shown that blueberries improve memory and brain performance by repairing damaged brain cells.

• Important vitamins and minerals: blueberries contain vitamin K, vitamin C, vitamin A, B-complex, manganese, zinc, etc.

• Good for the waist: low in calories, high in fiber, blueberries can reduce belly fat.

TIP: Organic blueberries have higher concentrations of total antioxidants. When shopping for blueberries, look for a deep blue color and firm berries. Shake the basket a little to make sure they move around. If they don’t, the berries are older and softer. Remember, the deeper the color, the more antioxidants you’re getting.
"What's Good For You? Radishes!"
by Jo Ann Bellistri - GEM Magazine LI 6/13/12

Radishes are under appreciated. We slice them and add them to our salads, sometimes munch on them as snacks, but we give them little nutritional credit. It’s time to exalt the radish!

BENEFITS:
• Healthy Skin: Radishes stimulate the circulatory system, contributing to skin radiance.

• Diet Friendly: A ½ cup serving a radishes = 19 calories. They are filling and have high water content.

• Detoxifying: Radishes contain sulfur based chemicals that cleanse the liver and gallbladder.

• Anti-Congestive: They are effective at cutting and dissolving mucus, relieving congestion in the respiratory tract.

• Anti-Cancer: They are said to be especially effective at fighting oral, colon, intestinal, kidney and stomach cancers.

TIP: Look for radishes that are crisp and firm. Red radishes are available year round. Black radishes are generally in season from winter through spring. Enjoy them in salads, as snacks and in fresh juices.
"What's Good For You? Eggs!"
by Jo Ann Bellistri - GEM Magazine LI 6/15/12

Eggs have an undeserved bad rap. They are nutritional powerhouses, providing us with loads of vitamins and nutrients that help our brain, eyes and heart.

BENEFITS:
• Eye Health: Lutein and zeaxanthin are two of the best nutrients for the eyes, and eggs contain both.

• Protein Star: Eggs are a perfect source of protein, containing all nine essential amino acids.

• Brain Food: Choline is an important nutrient in eggs that helps regulate the brain, nervous system and cardiovascular system.

• Heart Health: Eating eggs on a regular basis can help prevent blood clots, strokes and heart attacks.

TIP: The egg yolk is good for you! Skip the egg white omelette and go for the real thing.
"What's Good For You? Watermelon!"
by Jo Ann Bellistri - GEM Magazine LI 6/18/12

Refreshing, thirst-quenching, sweet and delicious…..oh, it’s super nutritious too.

BENEFITS:
• Weight Loss: It is low in calories, high in water, high in volume and filling. Watermelon is a dieter’s friend.

• Cancer Fighting: The lycopene in watermelon has been shown to help fight prostate, lung and stomach cancers.

• Energizing: Watermelon contains vitamins B6, B1 and magnesium which help in energy production.

• Hydrating: Rich in electrolytes and potassium, watermelon can help replenish what we lose through perspiration.

• Immunity Booster: Watermelon has a high concentration of vitamin C, which is an important antioxidant in warding off illness.

Tip: Watermelon is at its freshest and sweetest in the summer. My grandma once told me to knock on several watermelons and choose the one that sounds most hollow because it will be the sweetest. I have no scientific studies to back that one up, but I think it works. Thanks Grandma!
"What's Good For You? Aloe Vera!"
by Jo Ann Bellistri - GEM Magazine LI 6/20/12

More than just a desert plant, aloe vera has nutritional and medicinal benefits.

BENEFITS:
• Skin Soother: Aloe vera helps reduce inflammation and soothes skin. It is effective on sunburns, insect bites, acne, rashes, cuts and scrapes.

• Digestive Health: Taken internally, aloe vera is an effective laxative and can help destroy certain bacteria and parasites in the intestines.

• Immune Boosting: The polysaccharides in aloe vera allow the immune system to fight viral, bacterial and fungal infections.

• Anti-Inflammatory: In animal studies, aloe vera has shown the ability to reduce inflammation and arthritis.

• Kidney Health: A tonic-adaptogen, aloe vera helps balance blood sugar and enhances the liver and kidneys.

Tip: When using aloe vera topically, cut off a section of the leaf and open it, exposing the inner gel. Place the gel on the affected area for several hours. When taking aloe vera internally, begin with small doses of the juice (a couple tablespoons) or capsules to determine how your body reacts to it. If aloe vera is right for you, drink 2 -4 ounces per day for optimal benefits.
"What's Good For You? Vitamin B12!"
by Jo Ann Bellistri - GEM Magazine LI 6/25/12

Vitamin B12 is responsible for keeping our nerves and red blood cells healthy. People who are deficient in B12 experience fatigue, constipation, poor memory, mouth sores, vision problems, asthma, and many more symptoms.

BENEFITS:
• Increased Energy: Converts carbohydrates into glucose in the body, leading to increased energy.

• Reduced Depression & Stress: Helps in the maintenance and regulation of the nervous system.

• Digestive Health: It allows food to be absorbed efficiently and promotes metabolism of fats and carbohydrates.

• Skin, Hair and Nail Health: It helps cell reproduction and renewal of the skin.

Tip: The foods that contain the most B12 are: liver, meat, eggs, milk, cheese, and some varieties of fish. If you think you might be deficient, you can ask your doctor to do a blood test. If you are a vegetarian, B12 supplements are readily available.

"Those Tricky Food Labels!"
by Jo Ann Bellistri - GEM Magazine LI 6/28/12

They can be so convincing…..less fat, no sugar, and more fiber. Don’t be fooled by the claims on the front of the package. Turn it over and check out the real ingredients.

TIPS
• The first ingredient is always the biggest.
• Avoid partially hydrogenated oils.
• Avoid high fructose corn syrup
• Avoid artificial colors & flavors.
• Check the sodium content.
• Check the sugar content.

You will be surprised at the unnecessary ingredients in your everyday products. A jar of marinara sauce should contain; tomatoes, basil, olive oil, garlic and maybe a few other spices. However, most jars have added sugar and preservatives. The sugar is added because it makes you eat more and the preservatives are added to extend the shelf life. Always look for short ingredient lists!
"What's Good For You? Bok Choy!"
by Jo Ann Bellistri - GEM Magazine LI 6/29/12

For the past several weeks I have been buying organic baby bok choy at my local farmer’s market. There is nothing better than fresh, local and organic produce. The bok choy has been amazing!

BENEFITS:
• Waist Friendly: It has a high water content and is one of the lowest calorie vegetables.
• Cancer Fighting: Bok choy contains compounds that have been shown to lower cancer risks.
• Vitamin Rich: It’s loaded with vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin K, folate, and vitamin B6.
• Mineral Rich: Bok choy contains a good amount of calcium and potassium

TIP:
I prefer sautéed bok choy because the high heat cooks it quickly so the leaves wilt, but the stalks remain crisp. Add garlic and freshly grated ginger to the olive oil and when it’s done, season with a dash of soy sauce.

"What's Good For You? Water!"
by Jo Ann Bellistri - GEM Magazine LI 7/2/12

Drink Water! Coffee, tea, soda, alcohol and energy drinks are not water. They contain water, but also contain dehydrating agents. The human body is composed of 25% solid matter and 75% water. Water is vitally important to the health of our bodies.

BENEFITS:
• Regulates Body Temperature
• Detoxifies
• Helps with Metabolism
• Protects our Organs
• Helps to Alleviate Fatigue
• Helps to Alleviate Hunger
• Reduces Headaches
• Reduces Sugar Cravings

TIP:
If you are unsure of your hydration level, look at your urine. If it’s clear, you are hydrated. If it’s dark, you need more water.

"The Scoop On Sugar!"
by Jo Ann Bellistri - GEM Magazine LI 7/3/12

Reducing the amount of refined sugar in your diet can lead to health benefits. Refined sugar in the form of high-fructose corn syrup and sucrose (table sugar) is a common ingredient in sodas, juices, desserts and even condiments.

BENEFITS of reducing refined sugar:
• Reduced body fat: Refined sugar is packed with calories and no nutrients.

• Improved immune system: Sugar can suppress your immune system.

• More physical and mental energy: Refined sugar causes spikes in blood sugar and later crashes that lead to less physical and mental energy.

• Healthier teeth: Sugar can lead to tooth decay and loss.

• Reduced risk of diabetes: By reducing refined sugar, your body will use insulin at a healthier rate.

TIP:
Sugar cravings are your body asking for energy. Eat a whole grain complex carbohydrate in the morning and you are likely to have plenty of energy until lunch. Steer clear of candy and soda and grab a piece of fruit, veggies or a handful of raw almonds if you need an energy boost between meals.

"Great Grain!"
by Jo Ann Bellistri - GEM Magazine LI 7/10/12

Brown rice contains the highest amount of B vitamins out of all grains. It is a whole food and takes longer to digest than white rice, so it provides your body with sustained energy.

BENEFITS:
• Generates energy
• Promotes good digestion
• Lowers cholesterol
• Good source of manganese and selenium
• Rich in fiber
• Promotes bone health

TIP:
Look for organic brown rice that contains a small amount of green grains. I recommend buying rice from the bulk section of your health food store and keeping it in an airtight container in a dark cupboard.

"Tea!"
by Jo Ann Bellistri - GEM Magazine LI 7/17/12

Next to water, tea is probably the healthiest and most consumed drink in the world. Whether you prefer green, black or white, you really can’t go wrong. They each offer a host of powerful health benefits.

BENEFITS:
• Antioxidant protection
• Lowers cholesterol
• Has anti-inflammatory properties
• Protects against heart disease
• Protects against cancer
• Stimulates the metabolism

TIP:
To get the most health benefits out of your cup of tea, skip the cream and sugar and brew for 3 – 5 minutes to bring out the polyphenols. A drop of honey or a squeeze of lemon is good too.

"Farm Fresh!"
by Jo Ann Bellistri - GEM Magazine LI 7/20/12

Shopping at your local farmers’ market is not only a fun family activity; it’s also good for you and your community.

BENEFITS:
• Fresh: Just picked produce is tastier and healthier than produce that has traveled for weeks.

• Seasonal: When you shop at the farmers’ market you get nature’s bounty. Eating seasonally provides health benefits.

• Variety: You will find a vast array of fruits and vegetables that you may not see in your supermarket. It’s fun to try something new.

• Less pesticides & herbicides: You will find an abundance of organic produce at the farmers’ market. Small farmers that do use pesticides and herbicides, use much less.

TIP:
To find a farmers’ market near you, visit www.localharvest.org

"Tomatoes!"
by Jo Ann Bellistri - GEM Magazine LI 7/31/12

Summertime is tomato time. They are plentiful and at their tastiest right now, so take advantage of all the wonderful health benefits tomatoes have to offer.

BENEFITS:
• They are loaded with cancer fighting antioxidants.

• The lutein in tomatoes is beneficial for eye health.

• The vitamin B helps lower blood pressure
& cholesterol levels.

• The lycopene in tomatoes helps fight cancer
and is great for the skin too.

• Tomatoes are an excellent source of immune boosting
vitamin C.

TIP:
For the most flavorful tomatoes, your best bet is to buy locally farmed, vine-ripened tomatoes or grow your own. Organic tomatoes have more vitamin C and bioflavonoids then conventionally grown tomatoes.
