Yoga: An Equation For De-Stressing

Neeta Shah MD, FACP and VP of Women’s Health Community Services at North Shore-LIJ Health System reports that “there is scientific evidence that yoga helps to reduce stress, back pain, chronic headaches, depression, anxiety, high blood pressure and sleeplessness due to the mind-body connection.”
There are many styles of yoga including Vinyasa and Hot Yoga. Some hot yoga styles include The Barkan Method® and Bikram®. New to the scene is Anti-Gravity® Yoga which is practiced while suspended in the air in a hammock.
The practice of yoga incorporates physical poses (asanas) to restore or increase flexibility, breathing techniques, meditation and relaxation. It is estimated that twenty million people in America practice some form of yoga.
How does yoga help us de-stress?
Karen Alpert, a mother of three, certified Barkan Hot Yoga instructor and co-owner of Yoga Flex in Commack, NY said, “Yoga is a chance to ‘escape to the mat’ and devote time to yourself every day. The heat allows us to go deeper into the body to relieve stress, tension, and anxiety. Hot yoga also works to elevate mood as endorphins are released into the body leading to an overall feeling of well-being. After class your body feels better, you have greater clarity of thought, and you’re better able to handle mental and emotional challenges.”
Laura Weil Caldari, a wife, mother of two, two-time breast cancer survivor and a Hatha Yoga Instructor at Om Sweet Om Yoga in Port Washington, NY and Yoga Flow Studio in Glen Head, NY said, “I focus on self-acceptance, breathing and proper alignment. I believe yoga strengthens and stretches the body, the mind and the spirit.”
The practice of yoga and hot yoga helps individuals to strengthen their resolve. If you are looking to de-stress, try it. It is recommended that you consult your physician before engaging in any exercise program.
