Taking A Stand To Protect Our Children

This summer the Dignity for All Students Act (DASA), New York State’s anti-bullying law, went into effect–just in time for the new school year.
DASA aims to put an end to harassment and discrimination based on race, color, weight, national origin, ethnic group, religion, disability, sexual orientation, gender or sex. Verbal threats, intimidation and abuse are all covered under DASA, with the hope of giving our children a safe educational environment.
DASA prohibits harassment and discrimination while on school property or grounds–by employees and students. Another key aspect of DASA is that it defined “harassment” to help schools understand exactly what actions are prohibited. Harassment is the creation of a hostile environment by conduct, verbal threats, intimidation or abuse that could unreasonably interfere with educational performance, opportunities, benefits or physical or emotional well-being or cause fear for physical safety.
Public and elementary school students are protected under DASA, which also requires that schools amend their Code of Conduct to incorporate DASA’s intents. Further, administrators are mandated to report bullying or harassment to the NYS Department of Education.
Do you know what your child is doing online, or in school? Educating kids about their own behavior is important, too.
